I cannae understand it

As we await news from the BBC Radio Theatre of James Harding's job cuts (I'm betting down to under 500, from estimates closer to 650), the impact can only re-inforce the effects of next week's strike over pay, scheduled to coincide with the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The BBC is not the host broadcaster for the Commonwealth Games. Pictures are being supplied by a consortium of Sunset & Vine and Global Television, with the support of 120 students - and provided they can be routed to Red Bee, then there should be managers capable of getting them to air.

More problematic is the interpretation. On BBC1 we're promised a full hour of pre-amble, with hosts Gary Lineker and Clare Balding, before we get to two hours of commentary with Huw Edwards and Haxel Irvine. Huw has previously observed NUJ strikes. On 5 Live, Mark Pougatch is scheduled to introduce a four-hour programme around the ceremony, with the support of Gavin Hastings and Tanni Grey-Thompson. Radio Scotland is going for three hours, with Richard Gordon, David Wilkie, Jackie Bird and Tom English.
